Credo
It goes something like this:
- How many human beings have ever lived? Say 20 billion. Every one has gone from womb to tomb: rich, poor, religious leaders, everyone. Except One, who was put in the tomb but didn't stay there.*
- Everyone recognizes that this was a unique person. Without writing a book, getting elected, travelling widely, or firing a shot, this single individual has changed the world more than anyone else, and is universally respected.**
- He is on record as saying things that would be completely loopy coming from anyone who wasn't the Son of God, for example:
I am the way, the truth and life. No-one comes to the Father except by me.
And
Come to me ... and I will give you rest for your souls.
- This same Individual somehow manages to incorporate The Church of England into His divine purposes (to give just one example), hinting at depths of irony and a dry humour that few suspect a Deity capable of.
- So is he, or isn't he? The One?
* This is a modern argument -- the fact of the resurrection changes everything.
** Perhaps this is a post-modern argument, based on character and authenticity.
